The Do’s and Don’t's about buying a used engine

1:  Remember that this is a used part with a limited warranty. Extended parts and labor warranties are available; ask your parts specialist about these options.

2: What does the warranty cover? In most cases it only covers parts. That means bad or good you are responsible for the labor.

3: Make sure you have year, make and model along with the VIN. (Which can be found under the lower portion of the Windshield on the driver's side). It can also typically be found on your registration card or title.

4: Always have your Sales Reps contact the mechanic about details of shipping and double-checking the engine specs.

5: You can always ask for the VIN# of a used engine that you are looking to buy. You can check the VIN# with sources like Carfax.com, etc.

6: Invest on a timing chain/belt; valve cover gaskets, water pump, sparkplugs, belts, hoses, etc.  It so much cheaper and easier to replace these parts now, before the engine is installed.

Automotive Explanations & Common Phrases

What Is the difference between a remanufactured engine, a rebuilt engine, and a used engine?

Although the terms remanufactured and rebuilt are sometimes used in the automotive industry interchangeably, the following definitions normally apply:

A remanufactured engine is a used engine that has been made as close to new as possible. Wearable parts are automatically replaced. All core material is closely inspected and checked against original equipment specifications for tolerances. Replacement parts are new and made in the same production process as original equipment. Testing is performed to manufactures specifications and original production standards.

A rebuilt engine is a used engine that has been reconditioned by cleaning, inspecting, and replacing severely worn or broken parts. Serviceable parts that are within the manufacturer's acceptable wear limits are reused.

Rebuilt engines normally have fewer new components than a remanufactured engine.

A used engine is one that is removed from one vehicle and placed into another with very little, if any, reconditioning being performed. Talk with a facility representative and make sure that you understand exactly what you're getting before you authorize repairs.

Short block is an automotive term describing an engine sub-assembly. A short block is the portion of an engine below the head gasket and above the oil pan.

A flat head engine will include the cam and valve train. An overhead valve style of engine will not include the aforementioned parts on a short block. A short block is usually purchased to upgrade the water jacket, piston size or bore.

Assemblies typically include the crankshaft installed and balanced along with the main bearings.

A short block is considered destroyed when it either warps or cracks.

Long Block is an automotive term describing an engine sub-assembly consisting of the following: Short block. The long block is always a superset of the corresponding . Short block. Cylinder head. A complete new or remanufactured cylinder head is Installed with a new head gasket and torqued to specification.

Complete cylinder heads include new or reconditioned valves, valve springs, valve guides, (if applicable) valve seats, (if applicable), valve locks, and valve keepers.

The bare head is free from cracks, warps, or holes. On most engines, the camshaft will be installed. On many engines with timing gears, the camshaft will be timed.

A Long block engine replacement will typically require swapping out parts from the original engine to the long block. These parts include the intake manifold, the exhaust manifold, alternator, power steering pump and air conditioner, if any are installed on the vehicle.
